Journal of Corporate Treasury Management, March 2007 - This paper provides a brief history of treasury technology over the past twenty-five years and discusses how technology has contributed to the transformation of the treasury role from data gathering to risk managing to business partnering. It discusses how the next wave of internet technology, coined Web 2.0, will continue to create signficant value for the treasury organisation in the form of more automation, real-time information and enhanced decision-making. In particular, ASP models, also known as application service providers, where the system and data is housed outside a company’s own servers, will continue to grow in functionality and popularity. The impact ASP (or software as a Service ‘SaaS’, synonymous with ASP) can have on treasury operations of all sizes is also examined.
